Chrysalis

Contentment, balance and peace

“Realise that true happiness lies within. Waste no time and effort searching for peace, contentment and joy in the world outside” Unknown.

It has been a few weeks since I forced my brain and being to engage in thinking for this project. The last was already challenging, not feeling productive. However, you are what you do and therefore if I do nothing, I won’t reach any kind of creative mindset that will see this project through.

After our last meeting I was left a bit unsure about how I would re-engage in the process of developing ideas for this project. I looked back on both our initial thoughts and decided to pick on the commonalities and see where it would take me.

A had created a visual map, a mind map I think, with broad concepts, looking almost like a structure with key steps in her life.

Looking back on my first exploration, and the use of silk cocoons, thinking more about this idea of resilience, endurance and peace, it took me to the concept of contentment, peace and balance. I liked the idea of the chrysalis relating to the inside/outside concept of contentment, happiness and resilience.

Inspired by A’s fashion drawing session, I thought I’d head in straight and design something. This approach actually helped me think about what I wanted to communicate. The idea that something lies within and that the outside world cannot affect anymore. A safe space has been built over years of enduring and happiness, peace and contentment are found inside.

fish skin
I came across the idea that fish skin is the next sustainable material in Fashion, although dubious, I liked the texture, strong and pliable, also shell like looking. The golden colour inspired the design, gold a strong metal and reminiscent of power, godly, anchored.
pleated white material
The idea of pleats appeal in that it allows the fabric to constrict and unfold. It can be hidden inside the shell and expand out of it revealing a peaceful interior, free flowing. The interaction between shell and inside is also interesting in what movement and sound this could trigger.

  • Omg… what a brilliant development of the ‘chrysalis’.
The garment shows a very advanced first approach of what could be the core concept of one of the outfits.
I think you have moved forward big time…
