It has been a few weeks since I responded to this call to create a collage for this online gallery.
I initially threw myself into the challenge in order to jolt myself into a creative practice I struggled to revive.
I has continued to be a struggle as I procrastinated for weeks looking at this pack and not knowing if I will have enough creative power in me to produce something I am not only happy with but also happy to release to the public.
The pack disconcerted me quite a bit at first and I nearly fell into a trap I had been in before with approaching it purely as an aesthetic exercise and wanting to create “something nice”, maybe influenced by my journal making and the large amount of instagram content I consume on journaling every day.
I soon decided I wanted to make a statement piece. I have often wanted to make art that spoke but often over my past experiences, the work got buried into either too deep conceptual ideas or too literal imagery and not as eloquent or provocative as I would have liked.
The current state of the world, weighting more and more on my psyche, feels a place to start, although, what can be said that hasn’t been said by many over and over again.
As our humanity keeps declining on a global scale, our daily lives, work, social environments, sometimes families, only mirror the power relationships we are witnesses to behind our screens.
We add a little sparkle to that, and voila! the Thief, the Bad and the Ugly disappear for Peace, Love and Happiness.
Thankfully, Tebbs provided many flowers in the collage pack I received.
