The easiest person to deceive is oneself
A quote by Edward Bulwer-Lytton
While the idea that my confidence was so low that I would pay £20 for a pack of decoupage against the promise of an online exhibition (which never manifested) was running constantly in my mind while I was going through the process of kickstarting my creativity with a project I could have ultimately given myself.
Nonetheless I kept going and got to a space where I was enjoying exploring ideas, imageries, techniques and finding a conduit to expressing the thoughts that were invading my mind at the time and how so of us, most of us in our secure set ups, easily brush off the atrocities and inequalities of this world. I am one of the worst perpetrator of this. Escaping through comfort, beauty in the relative peace so many of us are lucky to enjoy.
What, for me represents this perfectly are the 1950’s with the soars of the glossy magazines, modern appliances, fashion and heightened consumerism; the ability to gloss over terrible truths.
And from this, I wanted to incorporate the idea of deceit through concepts such as white washing, propaganda, sexism and glamour.
